parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service. for that, we must do more. for that, we must commit this day and every day to serving you as well as you've served us. >> veterans day was traditionally known as armistice day to honor world war i. in 1954, congress changed the name to veterans day to honor those who served. >> the world war ii memorial and other war memorials were packed yesterday as surviving veterans traveled to reflect on their experiences. many who didn't serve also vittvitt those memorials. they said it was to pay respect to those who served their country. >> the people that gave their lives, the people who served, it means a lot. it's a historical moment, and i think we should all cherish it. >> many of the veterans traveled here thanks to honor flights.

the toll lanes and follow directions from that area. around the beltway, outer loop at central avenue, can't see it on camera, there it is. construction blocking the left lane and continues on the outer loop this time as you make your way to university boulevard. you're going to be forced down to just one lane, eventually the shoulder lane, to get by the road work there. just be cautious of that because that shoulder lane pretty gravelly in that area. as you pass university boulevard, all your travel lanes are open. aaron and eun, back over to you. >> thank you, danella. >> news 4's angie goff is following breaking news at the live desk. this morning a tough warning from israel after a gaza rocket hits the house. a rocket launched from the gaza strip strikes land in southern israel but not hurting anyone. this after a night of cross-border violence. the military says more than 110 rockets pounded israel since saturday. this violence could spark more hostility just a couple months

before israel's elections. the country's leaders say the race won't keep them from attempting to stop the rocket attacks. at the live desk, angie goff, news 4. this morning we're learning more about the investigation that revealed that now former cia director david petraeus was having an affair. petraeus' mistress, author paula broadwell, was sending liaison at an air force unpaid base in tampa. that woman is reported as jill kelley. she reportedly went to the fbi when she received the threatening message, and that is whatriggered the bureau's investigation. >> mrs. broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her, and she was frightened, and she went to the fbi. oh, i can't believe it, but that's what it is. >> one of petraeus' former associates says petraeus and his wife were longtime friends of

kelley and her husband. he says petraeus and kelley did not have an affair. >> petraeus won't testify before congress this week about the attack on the u.s. consulate benghazi libya. acting cia director will take his place. senator dianne feinstein, who's the chair of the committee, may call on him later to testify. she says his resignation has nothing to do with the attack on benghazi. the president will meet with members of the business community before sitting down with congressional leaders on friday. the president wants to build a consensus for his approach to avoiding the financial catastrophe. senior democrats and republicans are confident they can reach on a spending plan before the end of the year before billions of dollars in tax hikes and spending cuts will take effect,

possibly sending us into a deep recession. economists warn we may feel the effects of the budget standoff long before new year's eve. >> if in a few weeks they've failed to reach an agreement, you're going to see anxiety growing in the u.s. board rooms. it's going to be a rough couple of months for the u.s. economy. >> president obama says he's willing to compromise to reach an agreement, but he insists america's top earners pay more in taxes. it's approximately two weeks since hurricane sandy hit shore in the northeast. crews are still working to restore power to 120,000 homes in new jersey. 4,000 residents are still living in shelters. fema has approved more than $450 million in assistance. in the meantime, governor andrew cuomo plans to ask the government for $30 billion in disaster aid. the federal red cross says it has received $117 million in donations to help the victims of sandy.

the agency also says its response has been near flawless. some residents in certain areas disagree with that. they say the help has been sporadic and very difficult to find. >> red cross hasn't offered any assistance until yesterday. they take people's hard working money to assist people, and when push comes to shove, they don't assist. >> i think we are near flawless in this operation. i'm just so proud of everything that we are doing on the ground. >> the red cross says sandy poses unique challenges. it's the first cold weather hurricane, and it struck in an extremely urban area. the agency maintains it has more than 5,700 volunteers in the region who have already handed out nearly 5 million meals and snacks to people in need. the new york veterans day parade not only honored those who fought for our country but collected donations for hurricane sandy victims. the group collect winter coats for people who were affected by

you are looking at the united states air force band, and singing sergeants had the pleasure last night of hosting a program that the air force band puts on with maryland public television up in owens mill. ruben studdard and the irish tenors were part of that presentation. just a spectacular performance by these professionals in the air force band and the guests who came to say thank you to our veterans. aired live last night on maryland public television, and i appreciate being allowed to participate in that. it will air again tomorrow night, tuesday night at 8:00, if you didn't catch it there. >> did you sing? >> i sang from my seat in the audience at the end there. >> wonderful, all right. good for you. congrats once again to the veterans and those who put on that performance. 4:41. time for weather and traffic on the ones. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein says, all right, that

gorgeous weekend history. we're going to try to squeeze one more day of mild weather and big changes moving in tonight. right now around the region, just a few clouds coming in from the west and maybe a few sprinkles in western maryland. we have temperatures on the chilly side. we're down to low 40s near 60 in the region. could have patchy fog forming in the next couple of hours. mostly cloudy by noontime. upper 60s, midafternoon and going all cloudy. tonight for this monday evening, it does look like it will be getting increasingly humid and a chance of rain by late evening until midnight. we'll likely have showers moving in from the west. we'll look at that and chilly changes on the way for the rest of the week and the weekend in ten minutes. good morning, danella. how's traffic? an update on an accident at 395 southbound at seminary road. now out of the roadway for you. disabled vehicle along i-95 in virginia. the first one southbound on prince william parkway blocking

welcome back. at 4:45 this morning, we're getting a better look caused by the deadly explosion in indiana.

it killed two people and injured seven others late saturday night in indianapolis. investigators believe the explosion happened inside this home near that burned out car. the blast obliterated the house itself and the home next door. investigators are trying to determine what sparked that explosion. >> there are many explosions, accidents, and different things, but i have not seen anything with this type of destruction that happened so quickly. >> they suspect that some sort of gas leak caused the explosion. firefighters evacuated more than 200 people from the neighborhood. the explosion damaged or destroyed about three dozen homes. 14 before the hour. this morning a college student is under arrest for scaring people inside a movie theater not far from where the colorado movie theater shootings happened. "the denver post" says the 17-year-old walked into a theater in boulder, colorado, last night wearing a clown hat and a mask of the joker from the batman movies. in july more than 20 people were

killed and 50 injured during a filming of "the dark knight rises" in aurora, colorado. the teen was unarmed and didn't hurt anyone, but several people ran out after seeing him and alerted security. one person dead and an officer injured. a 64-year-old man walked into police headquarters and tried to shoot an officer behind protective glass. the officers ordered him to drop the gun, eventually shooting and killing him. the injured officer is expected to make a recovery. a small earthquake is causing problems in the small eastern country of myanmar. saturday morning, a 6.8 magnitude quake rocked the country. it caused plenty of physical damage, collapsing buildings and bridges, and even damaging ancient buddhist pagodas. as many as 12 people are feared dead. some of those may have happened when the quake caused a mine to collapse. venice, italy, is used to

water but not this much. heavy rains have put 70% of the city under water, some by as much as five feet. flooding is common this time of year in the northern city. this year is worse than most. this is the fifth highest level of floodwater in 140 years. the city is working on movable barriers that would protect it from high tides and floodwaters, but they won't be operational for an additional two years. this morning police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a 20-year-old man. they found him suffering from a gunshot wound in the 7300 block of 23rd avenue in lewisdale saturday morning. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police are trying to identify a suspect and a motive in this case. and police in howard county are also trying to figure out who shot a fast food restaurant manager. the manager of taco bell on minnesout minstrel way in columbia was

shot. the man's name has not been released. the csx train derailed just north of richmond after 9:00 last night. amtrak had to stop train 66 at richmond's main street station and transfer passengers to buses. passengers arrived at union station by bus after 10:00 p.m. today the head of montgomery county public schools will share his vision for the future of the county school system. school superintendent joshua starr will deliver his first state of the schools address. he's calling it building the future together. starr has had a little more than a year to assess the school system. he's now in the middle of his second school year on the job. nearly 300 janitors at walter reed national military center in bethesda say they haven't been paid in two weeks. the union that represents the janitors says it's filed a complaint against federal contractor fscat enterprises. the union claims it hasn't been

paid by the government. the union also says the janitors have been reluctant to strike because of the patients at the hospital. a curious cat in bowie, maryland, came close to losing one of her nine lives after spending days on top of a utility pole. the cat is named fierce, apparently, disappeared on wednesday. yesterday a little boy spotted her on top of this bge utility pole just off of bel air drive. that's when the cat's owner linda drew called firefighters, who said she needed to contact the power company to be safe. crews showed up late last night with a cherry picker right there. the trouble is the scared cat, if you will -- that scared the cat, and she took off down the pole and into the bushes. drew says she's relieved the cat is down. >> i'm just glad she's down from there. i was pretty sick about her being missing. >> drew says she believes that fierce will return home sometime today.

open fields. right now it's near 50 in washington as well as along the tidal potomac and virginia tide water and the lower part of the bay. mild in the mountains, near 60 degrees. a pretty strong southerly flow ahead of a cool front that is triggering some rain right now from western ohio into indiana and parts of kentucky down to tennessee. that front is going to be arriving here late tonight and into tomorrow. for your morning commute by 6:00 a.m., patchy fog around. still in the 40s under a partly cloudy sky. by noontime, partly sunny. low to mid-60s. another rapid warmup today. we'll have a 50% chance of showers moving in late tonight, perhaps before midnight and then during the morning commute on tuesday. some sun back tomorrow afternoon but much cooler. highs only near 50 tomorrow and only in the 40s on wednesday with some sunshine. the chill remains all the way into the weekend. might get some rain sunday. i'll be back in ten minutes. your first 4 traffic with danella now.

good morning. >> good morning. checking things out along i-95 in virginia, as you make your way northbound past route 1, still seeing reports of a disabled vehicle. can't see it on camera at all. just want to give you a heads up. in the northbound lanes, hov lane restrictions have been lifted today on the 95. on the beltway, very light volume. outside the beltway, issue free. inside the beltway, nice and clear as well. if you're taking metro, keep in mind that metro is running on a saturday schedule. back over to you. >> thanks, danella. even nascar drivers get a little road rage every now and then. take a look at yesterday's advocare 500 in phoenix. jeff gordon apparently ticked off he'd been bumped by fellow racer clint bowyer earlier in the race, intentionally caused that crash. a fight broke out between gordon and bowyer's pit crews. nascar met with both drivers

welcome back at 4:57. the price is gas is expected to drop through the thanksgiving holiday. the lundberg survey found the average price for a gallon of gas already dropped nearly 21 cents in two weeks and could drop another 10 to 20 cents. the average price of regular gas is $3.57 in the district. in maryland it's $3.45. in west virginia, it's $3.57. the national average is $3.44. the money you're saving on gas could go to your thanksgiving meal. those hosting thanksgiving dipper plan to spend $246 this year. about 240 of those surveyed say they won't host this year because of the price. nearly 44% say they felt pressured into hosting because family or friends didn't want to pay for it. the site recommends you buy generic brands and keep decorations simple. the turkey in the middle of the table is the only centerpiece you need. >> our family, we do pot luck. everyone cooks something. who has the time and the money
